Bird by Bird by Ann Lamott
A book on improving your writing that's been around since the 1990's.
The advice is honest and useful, going through things step by step, or bird by bird.
Story of Art without Men by Katy Hessel
This one is the story of art history, but focusing on artists who aren't men. As 90% of the artists you'll hear of in a normal art history will be men, this book gives a different perspective on how art has been produced.
And also gave a list of artists to look up.
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
This one was written by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, almost 2000 years ago.
It's a list of how to live your life, but from the perspective of a man who had been through a lot and lived in literally another time.
The list is interesting and in many ways as relevant today as then, often with a little interpretation. But it's the context that's fascinating. A non-religious philosophy from a man who was maybe the most powerful in the world at the time (or top 3).
Learning How to Learn by Tesia Marshik
A book not on learning anything in particular, but more on the methodology of how to learn.
Learning itself is a skill, and this title looks at how you can break it down.
A bit dry at times, and seems focused on more academic learning, it's still got things that are useful whether you're learning languages, psychology, art techniques or finance!
Finishing Up
Not sure if this was the last of these or not.
Will find out in the new year.
Happy listening and reading!
